New broadcast deal for the A-League and W-League

The A-League and W-League have agreed to a five-year television broadcast agreement. Following a new broadcast deal, the A-League and W-League will be shown on free-to-air Network Ten and subscription streaming service Paramount+ for the next five years.

The Australian Professional Leagues (APL) will part ways with Fox Sports, which has televised the A-League since its inception in 2005, at the end of the 2020/21 season.

The new agreement with ViacomCBS, which owns Network Ten and Paramount+, will take effect next season

ViacomCBS has acquired a small stake in the APL as part of the deal, which is the first completed since the leagues separated from Football Australia.

streaming service Paramount+ for the next five years.

On Saturday nights, the A-League match of the round will be broadcast on Channel 10 and 10 Play on Demand.

Every Sunday, one W-League match will be carried live on auxiliary channel 10 Bold.

Matches from the A-League and W-League that are shown on free-to-air will also be simulcast on 10 Play.

On streaming service Paramount+, which starts in Australia on Wednesday, August 11, other games in both competitions will be behind a paywall.

APL managing director Danny Townsend remarked, “Fundamental to our strategy is a drive to ensure that we connect and interact with every Australian.”

“This arrangement kicks off that process by providing the game with unparalleled exposure and the support of an incredibly legendary and globally famous broadcaster.”

“Football is played all over Australia, and we believe that the creative power that this partnership will bring will enable the game to reach an audience that it has never reached before.”

Rugby Australia’s partnership with Nine Entertainment Co. and its streaming service Stan uses a similar model of free-to-air exposure and streaming.

However, unlike the rugby deal, which includes Stan Sport as an extra charge, football will be included in a Paramount+ subscription.

“We’re ecstatic to be partnering with the Australian Professional Leagues to become the new home of football for both the A-League and the Westfield W-League, offering all Australians access to more football than ever before,” said Beverley McGarvey, chief content officer and executive vice president of ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand
